AI Day: Elon Musk unveils ‘friendly’ humanoid robot Tesla Bot
During Tesla’s AI Day event, CEO Elon Musk introduced an AI-powered humanoid robot called Tesla Bot, emphasizing its friendly and non-threatening nature. This may seem contradictory to Musk’s previous warnings about the dangers of AI, but he believes that by taking a proactive approach, Tesla can lead in building ethical AI and robotics.
Musk’s concerns about AI’s potential risks to humanity have been well-documented, and he has previously expressed doubts about achieving safety in AI development. However, through initiatives like co-founding OpenAI, which aims to build safe Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), Musk has been actively working toward responsible AI development.
Tesla Bot, standing at 5ft 8in, is designed to navigate human environments and perform tasks that are dangerous, repetitive, or tedious. Musk presented the example of the robot being instructed to go to a store and fetch specific groceries. However, at this stage, the unveiling of Tesla Bot has been limited to PowerPoint slides, and the actual capabilities of the robot remain to be seen.
The introduction of Tesla Bot followed a presentation highlighting AI advancements in Tesla’s electric vehicles, portraying them as semi-sentient robots on wheels. Musk believes that humanoid form is a logical extension of Tesla’s AI technology.
The AI Day event aimed to showcase Tesla’s progress in AI and attract new talent to the company. Tesla’s recruitment page specifically mentions the development of a general-purpose, bi-pedal, humanoid robot as part of the next generation of automation. The company is seeking engineers in various fields to leverage their AI expertise beyond their vehicle fleet.
By unveiling Tesla Bot and emphasizing its intended use for mundane or hazardous tasks, Musk hopes to demonstrate Tesla’s commitment to responsible AI and robotics, as well as its dedication to advancing automation technology.
